Fishing, Shooting & Stalking

Rottal Estate is run traditionally which means we do all our fishing, shooting and stalking in-hand to ensure we protect the delicate Highland ecosystem. This provides visitors with some unique sporting activities.

If you are interesting in some fishing during your stay, you can experience the rush of Salmon fishing along 3.5 miles of the South Esk river or enjoy a more peaceful pace at our trout loch stocked with both brown and rainbow trout. You’ll also find wild brown trout fishing at Loch Wharral –  a 40 acre loch situated about 2000 ft above sea level with bothy.

The estate is home to a variety of wildlife including Duck (Mallard and Teal), Partridge, Pheasant, Grouse, Rabbit, Woodcock and Snipe; which makes it an ideal location for shooting. We can plan and guide you on shooting days to try  help you find exactly what you are looking for or take you out on rough days to experience a bit of it all.

Finally, we can provide tailored stalking experiences for visitors. Our estate is home to Red Deer who roam across our varied and rugged terrain, making the stalking experience a unique day out in stunning surroundings.

Our staff help in the day-to-day running of the estate so know the estate inside out, helping them to create the perfect day tailored to your groups needs and wants.

“Thanks for this and a really great couple of days. You have such a beautiful estate and made the shooting really work:  it is a great achievement that you must be so proud of.”

“Sometimes a little perspective is helpful in providing a reality check – but a week on – my memories of a classic Highland adventure at Rottal remains as crisp and enjoyable as ever. Thank you so much for helping me conjure up such a varied and full-on succession of days for some friends. Donald was first class company on all three days, varying the pace subtly, but simultaneously taking us to where we needed to go to find quarry.”

“You have a magical glen to enjoy and it was a real pleasure to have enjoyed its fruits over two days of terrific sport. I shot my first grouse and my first snipe. I was not able to add to the bag with a catch on the South Esk, but it was great to have cast my line. Thank you for your relaxed and welcoming hospitality, exemplified by all – Donald and his team especially.”

“Where to start? What a wonderful week of fun we’ve had at Rottal! I so enjoyed your wonderful mixed day at Rottal last Saturday. Rottal shooting goes from strength to strength, and every new drive or new peg brings such thrills – really spectacular shooting.”
